Projects in Action
Where Ideas Become Impact
Since its inception, WE Share has been shaped by grassroots energy, collaborative design, and real-world learning. Foundational initiatives such as the early Energy Alternatives all electric homes seminars at the Waiheke Energy Centre, the Electric Island Initiative, and the Our Energy / Energy Alternatives peer-to-peer / MTR pilot, among others, laid critical groundwork for what’s unfolding today. From early conversations across the island to practical trials and shared insights, every step has brought the vision closer to reality.
We acknowledge the presence of aligned local initiatives such as Electrify Waiheke, the Waiheke Sustainability Centre, and pioneering off-grid subdivisions. These community efforts reflect a broader interest in sustainable and resilient energy futures, and form part of the wider ecosystem in which WE Share is situated.
Today, WE Share is actively delivering on-the-ground initiatives designed to demonstrate what’s possible when communities lead. These projects provide the foundation for future growth, policy innovation, and scalable models that others can adopt.
The following active projects represent our key areas of work in this phase of the rollout:
- Community Consultation and Events – Deepening engagement and listening to what matters most.
- Current Pilot – While not the first locally led energy initiative, this is the first formal pilot operating under a coordinated community virtual power plant (VPP) model. It is designed to establish working relationships with our core and key partners and to test and further develop infrastructure systems that support a long-term, energy-positive future for the community.
- WE Share Blueprint – Documenting the model so others can adapt and scale it.
Each initiative is a stepping stone toward a more connected, resilient, and community-owned energy future
